If you’ve just laid a fresh patch of new sod, it’s likely that your landscape is looking lovely for the first time since you’ve moved in, and that’s an exciting time! But right off the bat, it’s more important than ever to keep a close eye on the health of your newborn lawn. Laying sod can be shocking for the grass, so it’s important to take extra special care with your new sod in its early life. Here’s our advice on caring for your sod during its earliest stages of life – as provided by Prestige Lawncare, your source for lawn mowing, lawn maintenance, and landscaping services.
Weeks One and Two
During the first two weeks of your new lawn, it’s crucial to water appropriately. Immediately after installation of the sod, soak your lawn with a couple of inches of water. Keep your sod thoroughly wet throughout these initial two weeks. Keep an eye out for dry grass and any corners or edges with gaps (these areas dry out fastest). You should water your new sod three to five times per day depending on how dry it becomes between watering sessions. Don’t walk on your lawn until the end of week two.
At this point you can mow your lawn for the first time. Give your yard several hours to dry out, make sure the yard isn’t squishy, and make sure that sod pieces aren’t moving underfoot (if they do, just reposition them). Once your yard is ready, you can give it a trim.
Weeks Three and Four
From weeks three to four, you can begin watering less. Slowly reduce the amount of times you’re watering your lawn until you’re watering every other day or every third day (ideally at the end of week four).
After week four, you can settle into a watering routine that’ll work for your lawn for the rest of your season. See what works best for your yard by testing different watering cycles.
Mowing Your Sod
You’ll want to mow your sod when the grass grows to 3.5 inches tall. Never cut the grass below 2 inches in the first month (this could cause the grass to dry out). Again, be cautious not to move the sod rectangles underfoot, and reposition them if you do.
